Trump and Musk’s Dangerous Red State Betrayal: How They’re Destroying the People Who Trusted Them
A swindle. You think of swindles like Ocean’s Eleven—slick, smart, and charming, right? Well, Trump and Musk have executed a swindle that redefines the term. A swindle so audacious that it barely qualifies as a con. It’s happening right in front of us, in broad daylight. And they don’t care. Why? Because the real crime isn’t that they’re doing it in front of you—it’s that they don’t think anyone is paying enough attention to notice.
They promised hope. They promised jobs. They promised greatness for the towns left behind by everyone else. But what did they actually deliver? A $4.5 trillion tax cut for billionaires. And nothing. Absolutely nothing for the people who put them in office. No tax relief for tips. No tax relief for overtime. No tax relief for Social Security. A whole lot of nothing for the very people who believed in them. And who gets a cut? Corporate America. The billionaires. The oligarchs. People who didn’t need a thing.
This isn’t a populist budget. This is the budget of a betrayer.
The Economic Impact: The Red States Are Getting Hit Hard
Here’s how it goes: You live in a red state? You’ve been had. Plain and simple. This budget was designed for you. And not in a good way.
Farmers? Gone. Remember when Trump promised to take care of them? He didn’t mean Kansas, Iowa, or Nebraska. He meant himself. The Food for Peace program? Gone. Gone. No subsidies, no safety nets. If you’re not a billionaire or a multinational corporation, good luck.
Small businesses? Same story. The GOP promised they were going to help. They swore they’d cut taxes, remove red tape, level the playing field. But what did they do? Handed massive tax cuts to the hedge fund managers and multinational corporations. Meanwhile, your corner hardware store is left out to dry.
Veterans? Let’s talk about them. Trump promised to protect them, right? Well, he’s slashing funding for military healthcare. No critical services for the people who served.
Social Security and Medicare? Oh, they're not directly cutting them. But here's the thing: Administrative cuts? Delays. Backlogs. Less support. So, what’s the takeaway? The rich get richer. You get to “work harder.”
Internal GOP Backlash: Lawmakers Fight Their Own Party
And here’s the plot twist they didn’t see coming: The wrecking ball Trump handed to America? It’s now swinging straight into the GOP’s own states. The very states that voted for them are staring down the barrel of budget cuts that will devastate their lives.
Rep. Mike Simpson from Idaho? Caught between a rock and a hard place. His state has National Park Service sites. And now? 1,000 full-time staffers are about to get laid off. What’s that going to do to tourism towns? They’re about to be hammered. And Simpson? Desperation. He says, “I’m caught between my loyalty to Trump and the needs of my constituents.” But loyalty to who? You can’t eat loyalty. And you certainly can’t feed a family with it. If he speaks out, he risks alienating his base.
Sen. Jerry Moran from Kansas? He’s fighting to save the USAID’s Food for Peace program. This program helps farmers sell their crops abroad and fight hunger. This is life or death for his state. Senators like Shelley Moore Capito (WV) and Susan Collins (ME)? They’re doing the same thing—fighting to protect funding for health research. Meanwhile, the White House? Standing firm. Urging Congress to buy into their so-called “better stewardship of taxpayer dollars.” Translation: The billionaires? They're fine. You? Not so much.
What’s fascinating here is the tension. The tension between Trump’s grand vision and the very real needs of GOP lawmakers who are now realizing the cuts are going to cripple their own constituents. Simpson’s dilemma? He’s not just caught between a rock and a hard place. He’s stuck between the needs of his people and his political future.
And still, the pressure mounts. The White House continues to defend these cuts with its “fiscal responsibility” narrative. But the real question is: How long can this game of loyalty last when the livelihoods of working-class voters are at stake?
The Distraction Machine: How Trump Keeps His Base Distracted
Trump’s strategy is deceptively simple, and yet it’s brilliant in its execution. He keeps his base angry and distracted. He keeps them focused on cultural issues and hot-button controversies so they’re not looking too closely at the economic disaster unfolding under their noses.
Instead of addressing the rising financial strain in his voter base, Trump has shifted attention to the stuff that grabs headlines but deflects from the real, real issues. Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” Gaza as a resort. None of this has anything to do with the problems that matter to his base. And yet it works.
The people who voted for him? They’re too busy fighting over manufactured outrages. Meanwhile, their farms are collapsing. Their families are hurting. Their country is buried in debt.
And what about trade wars? Reciprocal tariffs. Confrontations with China. What’s all this? A carefully constructed narrative. A story of economic patriotism. Except while his supporters focus on the flashy distractions, the real issues—the rising deficit, the cuts to programs they rely on—are drowned out.
“Fiscal Responsibility” or Economic Sabotage?
Let’s talk about this “fiscal responsibility” business. The GOP is selling it. And here’s the thing: It’s a lie.
Remember the 2017 tax cuts? The ones that were supposed to stimulate the economy? Well, the deficit ballooned by $2 trillion. Meanwhile, the wealthy walked away with windfall tax cuts. And the middle class? They were left holding the bag.
Austerity measures in rural communities? They don’t lead to prosperity. They lead to higher unemployment, fewer jobs, and more inequality.
The GOP’s real agenda? Wealth consolidation. Not reform. Not help for the working class. Just more money for the rich.
Democrats: Time to Take Action
Democrats, it’s time to stop playing defense. It’s time to go on the offensive. Flood the zone. Flood it with facts. Use Trump’s own strategy against him. Flood red states with the truth. TV ads. Radio spots. Billboards. Social media blitzes. Don’t give his base a chance to ignore the facts.
The upcoming elections—Virginia, New Jersey—are crucial. These races need to be a referendum on Trump’s economic betrayal. Chris Murphy’s recent comments on the GOP’s budget cuts are a critical point for Democrats to latch onto. He’s called out the hypocrisy in the GOP’s fiscal narrative and urged his colleagues to fight for the working-class voters who are suffering under these policies. Democrats should take this moment and amplify his message: This budget is a betrayal of the very people it claims to serve.
And there’s more at stake: If the Democrats bail out Mike Johnson on ANY spending bill, they deserve the utter political destruction coming their way. Some are already falling for the "but we'll get blamed for shutting down the government" nonsense. Have you learned NOTHING? Not one vote.
Shutting down the government is the main tool the Democrats have at their disposal to stop the runaway train of Trump and Musk. They cannot back down. This is the moment to stand up and stop the GOP’s disastrous policies cold. The Democrats must take charge and put a halt to this madness before it's too late.
At some point, even the best shell game stops working. At some point, voters will start asking: What’s actually changed for the better? And that’s when the reckoning begins.
But the Democrats need to start that reckoning now. Not in November. Now. If they wait, it’ll be too late.
And the GOP? They’ll keep pushing distractions. They’ll keep promising prosperity. But they’re picking your pocket.
So, the question is this: How much more can they take before you notice?
Great essay, thanks for sharing! We are seriously at a crossroads here, and I agree that now is the time to move, before it’s too late. The recent pushback coming to Republicans at town halls is encouraging, and I think there is a group of people who voted for Trump that thought he was the lesser of two evils at the time that have seen the light. We need a leader going out there everyday stating the facts. This is what Trump and Musk did today, these are the lies they are telling you, this is how it will affect you, and here’s what we can do about it! A lot of that going on here on Substack, but for those in the MAGA bubble, they are hearing everything is going beautifully, just look at CPAC touting all their “accomplishments” and people cheering. We are not getting the message to the general population, we are talking amongst ourselves. I think Ukraine is also a turning point for all lot of folks who recognize what Trump is doing to them is despicable, and don’t support it. We have to engage, and reaching across the aisle is hard, but there are some who are reachable. It’s got to be all of us standing together, and maybe if we can do that, we come out of this better than ever!
Here’s the deal.
Each of us find a republican weak-link and ask them how the first thirty days is affecting them. You’ll be surprised how they respond. Two of my trump-toting neighbors are shell-shocked already. They did realize what their vote would cost them!
